Non Destructive Testing

What is it?


Non-destructive testing (NDT) can be described as: “methods of testing materials of objects for imperfections in a manner, which does not impair its future performance”. Non-destructive tests are performed to detect internal or external imperfections, to determine structure, composition or properties, or measure geometric characteristics.

Where does it apply to?

Non-destructive testing can be useful in many situations, ranging from QA of new installations such as boilers, buildings and aircrafts to determining the safety, or as a preventive of structures or equipments that have been used for years. Since NDT applies to so many stages of a project and also applies to such wide range of installations, it is almost impossible to create a complete listing of materials and objects that can be subjected to non-destructive testing. To give you an impression, we will list just some: heat-exchangers, pipelines, pressure vessels, storage tanks, turbines, welded steel constructions, aircrafts, ships, welds, etc.

Who can do it?

The result of non-destructive testing will serve as basis to evaluate the mechanical integrity of the inspected object, the maintenance requirements, and the expected retirement date. It will be clear that this evaluation must be used on accurate measurements. Therefore only qualified personnel can perform inspections. Project Specialists of Puerto Rico, Inc. has a solid (re)qualification program in place to assure that all inspections comply to OSHA 1910, US-NRC, SNT-TC-1A, and other applicable codes and regulations, as well as with our internal quality standards.
